The Great Lake-to-Lake Trails Route #1 Inaugural Ride will bring together cycling enthusiasts for the first time on a 275-mile sightseeing trail adventure from South Haven to Port Huron. The Inaugural Ride marks the grand opening of Michigan’s first fully-marked destination trail that travels from Lake Michigan to Lake Huron.
Cyclists on the Inaugural Ride will pedal down canopied trails through urban and rural areas while exploring popular coastal destinations as well as towns off the beaten path. Riders will stay in casual upscale hotels along the way and flock to trail towns during the evening, experiencing local flavor, culture and eateries.
The ride celebrates the opening of the Great Lake-to-Lake Trail that culminates in the unification of 9 counties, 34 municipalities, 42 townships and the 17 individual trails within them to form the state’s newest destination trail. The new trail brings continued national attention to the nation’s leading trail state.
The 7-day, 6-night ride begins on the beautiful Lake Michigan beach town of South Haven. The route travels down old railway corridors through vast farmlands, forests and popular metropolitan areas like Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Jackson, Green Oak Township, Pontiac and Rochester Hills. The ride ends in the historical coastal town of Port Huron, with picturesque views of Lake Huron. Riders will enjoy beaches, museums, wineries, breweries and excursions along the way.
Cyclists on the Inaugural Ride will also be treated to the first viewing of the Great Lake-to-Lake Trails Route #1 navigational trailhead buoys. Two huge 2.5-ton original Great Lake maritime buoys are being refurbished to represent the start and end of the Great Lake-to-Lake Trails Route #1. This creates a perfect photo opportunity to record the beginning and completion of the bike tour, and photo submissions will be posted online.
The Great Lake-to-Lake Trails Route #1 Inaugural Ride is fully supported with marked routes, medical staff and convenient SAG stops. The tour includes breakfast daily and catered dinners. To learn more or register visit www.greatlaketolaketrails.org.
