Sanjay Surana wrote an excellent article about a family trip across New Zealand in an RV (caravan is their description) in today’s Wall Street Journal. It reminded me that you could probably plan a cycling trip yourself using a Caravan.

I’ve done some research and here is what I’ve found using Christchurch on the South Island as the renting destination:
1) Apollo Motor Home Holidays offers a Cheapa 4 Berth Motorhome for 7 days in December 2017 at about $3400 New Zealand which is about $2400 at today’s exchange rate. If my math is correct, it is a 25 foot RV with a double bed over the driver’s area, and another double bed converted from the kitchen table.
2) Share A Camper has this South Island Road Runner 4 Berth camper for almost the same amount of money except that from December – February, the minimum is 21 days.
One of the best non commercial sites to use for a visit to any country or region are the official tourism site and the New Zealand Tourism site has a wealth of information – here is a link to road bike routes and mountain bike trails on the South Island.
If you like the idea of touring New Zealand in an RV but want a tour guide for you riding, try contacting Pedaltours. I don’t know if they lead day tours, but they’re located in New Zealand and have been leading tours throughout Asia (and parts of Europe) for over 30 years.
This is just the beginning of researching what could be a fun “bucket list” trip. If you have any comments or suggestions, or experiences from this type of vacation, please email me rhoefer@biketourfinder.net.
