Starting in Duluth, you’ll get an opportunity to explore learn about this iron ore and grain shipping center at the west end of Lake Superior including observing 1,000 foot freighters! The owner of Bike Tour Vacations grew up here so you’ll get a local’s perspective of this beautiful part of Northern Minnesota.

The tour rides north from Duluth on the Vermilion Trail, first used by prospectors 200 years ago as they search for gold, then for iron ore. Monday night’s stop is 64 miles north of Duluth in Virginia MN, home of the largest open pit iron mine ever.

Tuesday night’s stop is in in Tower MN, where there is a special iron mine tour down 1/2 mile in a 100+ year old iron mine. For those not interested in the mine, there are also above-ground activities.

The next day’s route goes northwest through Babbitt to Ely, a famous mining town and gateway to the Boundary Waters that are a part of Northern MN.

From Ely, the tour heads south through the Superior National Forest on the longest day of this trip but it does end with a 20 mile descent to Beaver Bay, a quaint off the beaten path town complete with a brew-pub!

The last day is about 50 miles along the shore of Lake Superior with plenty of sightseeing including Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls and the Silver Creek Cliff overlook. These are stunning views across miles and miles of perfect blue water. Stops for lunch can be in Two Harbors, or for those with more energy, a stop on Scenic North Shore Drive right next to the water.
